This collection consists of a variety of materials collected by Emma Echols during her decades of work with the Catawba Nation, including newspaper clippings, photographs, oral history notes and transcripts, magazines, programs, and other materials related to the Catawba Nation.

This collection contains materials related to the Catawba Indian Nation’s legal struggle to settle land claims with the State of South Carolina and to reclaim federal recognition. The collection includes research notes and articles, newspaper articles, copies of legal filings and rulings from state and federal courts, internal and external communications, contracts and invoices from the Native American Rights Fund, and attorneys representing the Catawba Indian Nation.

Also included are materials from a variety of professional conferences and annual meetings Chief George attended throughout the years.

Recordings of the Smoke SIgnals radio program produced by Catawba citizens and aired on WRHI AM 1340 in Rock Hill, SC from 1994 - 1997. Digital files were produced from a combination of reel-to-reel tape masters and cassette tape copies. The collection is missing some episodes, both in part and in their entirety.
